PRR GLd Gondola

The Prototype - Pennsylvania Railroad

The class GL, subclass "d", is kind of an odd car. These 1919, USRA-built hopper cars went straight to the PRR-owned Long Island Railroad. Only 300 were built for the LIRR. During October 1929 the cars became PRR road numbers 220000 through 220299. I model the summer of 1950, when there were 295 of the original 300 left over. Compared to the tens of thousands of PRR-owned freight cars, this class is rather insignificant, but still worth modeling. These cars could carry up to 100,000lbs (50 tons), weighed over 38,000lbs, and measured almost 32 feet over the strikers.

The Model

The model shown below of road number 220187 is by S-Helper Service, Inc., part number 01907. It appears to be a very accurate model. The model weighs 4.1oz (116g). This is a little light according to the NMRA standards (it should be close to 5oz).
