Research
The PRR's Chartiers Branch followed the Chartiers Creek. This provided the railroad with relatively smooth land between the rolling hills and the creek. The Chartiers Creek flowed from its origin in a northerly direction, emptying into the Ohio River just west of Pittsburgh, PA. The railroad passed by the Shingiss community from Washington, PA right before it reached Houston, PA and neighboring Canonsburg, PA. At mile-marker 16 a road crosses the track. That road connected the Pittsburgh Coal Company's Lindley Mine to Shingiss. Neither of these will be modeled due to space constraints.
Model
This part of my layout is modeled in the "bottom" of the "U"-shaped layout. This modeled area will be predominantly scenery with the Chartiers Creek running along the track. The Chartiers Branch had a lot of bridges in its short run. I will model two of them. The majority of them were plate girder bridges. About five were through truss bridges. I have decided to make both of the modeled bridges of the plate girder variety.
Overall Status
The entire area is finished, except for trees and telephone/telegraph wiring.
