Chartiers Branch - Washington, PA - Sub-roadbed

November 17, 2008

The development of the trackplan and the "cookie-cutter" type of sub-roadbed construction method is identical to what was described in greater detail in the Canonsburg page, so I will not repeat it here.

The left-hand side of the layout consists of two modules. This first photo shows the MDF sub-roadbed already installed on the blocks glued down to the smaller module.

The other module has a lot of blocks for both the sub-roadbed support and the various wires.

The last step in installing the sub-roadbed was to paint it to protect it from any future water damage.

As described in my Foam Roadbed article, I glued the foam down and then wound up tearing it all out after two weeks. I decided to also replace the MDF sub-roadbed, because the Pliobond glue used to attach the roadbed foam kept on stinking up the room. The next photo shows the new sub-roadbed cut from MDF. I used the old MDF as a template for cutting the new one. At least it proved to me that it is easy to start over again without having to tear out the benchwork!
