P & C Railroad Version 4 - Workbench

In January, 2004 I started work on the workbench that was to be fitted between two sets of storage cabinets. It was to sit under the layout, with minimum protrusion. The basic workbench is shown in the photo below. The horizontal surface is made from 3/4" Oak-veneered plywood, while the vertical shelving unit is made from 3/4" thick, 2-1/2" wide Poplar.

The backboard of the workbench was cut from 1/4" Oak-veneered plywood. The front corners of the horizonal surface were rounded so as to avoid getting hurt by them. They protrude about two inches into the room's open space. The little notches cut into the corners were needed because of the cabinets to the left and right of the workbench. These have doors that open and the doors needed some extra space to fully open.

Next, I built a simple frame to hold the workbench up. The idea was that from time to time I may want to repaint the workbench as it becomes dirty. The workbench would be attached to the frame with screws, but the frame is relatively permanently bolted to the cabinets.

Here's the final installation. I painted the workbench a light color (one that I happen to have in the garage). The color choice makes it easy to find small parts. The small shelves provide storage space for tools and parts while working on a project.
