Introduction
Before I decided to switch from N-scale to S-scale, I wanted to make sure there was enough "stuff" available to be able to pursue my modeling interests. In the process I wound up collecting a lot of links to web sites that provide S-scale items. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of items available.
I'm only interested in scale modeling, so you will not find any explicit "American Flyer" (i.e., toy trains) links here. Links to both standard and narrow gauge are included here. Links are in alphabetical order. Some links may appear under more than one category if the web site contains products belonging to different categories. I am indebted to John Degnan for starting me off with over 200 useful links (there are currently well over 400 links on this page). Next to the links, if I have some additional information about the manufacturer or of one of their products on another page of this web site, I have included a link to those pages for your enjoyment.
To avoid the problem of out-dated links on this page, these links are verified every Monday morning. Any dead links are promptly removed from the page. I may give the site a grace period of a couple of weeks if I get the impression the problem is temporary. I also add new web sites as soon as I learn about them. I use my company's product, FRSLinkCheck, to check the validity of the links. If you have your own web site, I highly recommend downloading a free copy. This page was last updated on January 2, 2012.

Active Projects (Now and Future)
This section contains announcements for new projects underway in S-scale. Your support will help make these projects a reality! S is a small community. Your one payment, your one e-mail, your one phone call, can be the one that makes a project become reality. Entries below are in alphabetical order. If you have an announcement like these for the S-scale community, please so I can post it here. If you have new or updated information, let me know. Some of the titles are links to the appropriate web site.
1:64 Modeling Guide
The 1:64 Modeling Guide is now available for subscription in digital format.
1927 ART Reefer
Bob McCarthy of TheSupplyCar.net has announced the kit for the 1927 A.R.T. (American Refrigerator Transit Co.) reefer. It is a laser-cut kit. The test kit has been assembled and decals are being produced by Jerry Glow. Currently the price is $49.95, which includes decals. Add $10 for shipping. Please contact Bob to reserve a kit.
B&O DS Wood Car
Bob McCarthy of TheSupplyCar.net has announced the kit for the B&O M-26 DS steel underframe box car. There will be a set of variations available, starting with the single 6-foot door, followed by the double-door version, and then the door-and-a-half version. These will then also later on be offered with truss rod and fish-belly underframes. In other words, there will be a total of nine different varieties. These kits will vary in price from $39.95 to $49.95 each plus shipping & handling. A bulk pack of five kits will cost $200 plus $50 shipping and handling, and you get a sixth kit free. The kits will not include decals, trucks, or couplers. Decals will be available for both the pre-Frisco and Frisco coonskin versions. The early car is based on the Quanah, Acme, and Pacific which became a subsidiary of the FRISCO Please contact Bob to reserve one or more kits. These photos are of the prototype model being used to develop the kit's instructions: photo #1, photo #2, photo #3.
B&O Hopper Decals
Ed Sauers is gauging the interest in a possible run of B&O hopper decals circa the 1940-60 era. The final price cannot be determined until the art work has been completed. Please contact Ed with an estimate for the number of decals you might want.
B&O I1 Wood Cupola Caboose
This caboose is now being shipped. It is being produced by Lake Junction Models, LLC, and sold through the TheSupplyCar.net. The caboose is being done in 3 versions, "as delivered", "modern version with wide end platforms", and a "transfer version without cupola". The caboose retails for $69.95, which excludes decals, trucks (either scale or hi-rail), and brake system. However, these are available for an additional charge. Contact Bob McCarthy at TheSupplyCar.net for orders, and contact Ed Sauers for prototype information about the caboose.
B&O Pump House
These kits have been manufactured and should start shipping soon.
Boxcar Kits
Bob McCarthy, of thesupplycar.net, has announced a series of kits featuring 6', 7', 8', DD, and Door-and-a-half double sheathed boxcars. These will have a steel underframe (channel stock with plate). An additional series with queen posts to cover 1900-1918 boxcars will also be produced. The kits will be manufactured by Lake Junction Models, LLC.. Grandt Line AB brake kits or Precision Vintage Classis K brakes will be included in the kit. The basic price will be $39.95 per kit plus shipping. Decals and/or trucks can be supplied at an additional cost.
Bridge Deck
Lake Junction Models, LLC. will be producing a bridge deck kit. This deck is intended to replace the Lionel 24" Truss Bridge, which is plane sheet metal. It is a laser-cut wood construction, but yet it is capable of supporting any S-scale engine.
Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad
Brooks Stover's Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad layout is now featured in a book. Visit the site for how to order a copy.
Code 88 Wheelsets
John Degnan has inquired with North West Short Line to see if they would consider producing S-scale code 88 wheels sets. The answer was yes, as long as there is sufficient demand. John has placed his order, and is requesting others to consider doing the same, so that this project can become a reality. Note that code 88 wheels means that they conform to the NMRA code 88 with regard to wheel tread and flange size. Note that code 88 is not Proto:64. Contact NWSL if you are interested or want to order these wheelsets.
Containers
Bill Lane's container project has now completed its final shipment. He will not re-run the project, unless you order at least 40 containers. You can see a photo of the set I bought on this web page.
Flatcar Semi-kit
John Degnan has purchased HO-scale flat car kits from a modeler by the name of Chad Boas. He asked Chad if he would consider doing them in S-scale, and he agreed, if an order of about 30 cars can be collected. The estimated price is between $25 and $30, which would include the main frame/body, and decking. Small details such as brake gear, stake pockets, and other things like trucks and couplers are not included. Contact John if you are interested so that he can keep track of the total count. Here's a photo of the HO-scale body: photo.
Fluted Passenger Car Sides
Pullman Standard S Scale Fluting is now available from Union Station Products.
Freight Cars
Jim King, of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc., announced on July 31, 2011 that he is considering making two of his HO-scale freights cars into S-scale models. They are the Southern Railway 52'6" gondola, and the Tennessee Central boxcar (the web site only shows the HO-scale models). He is estimating the price to be around $70 each without trucks, but with Kadee 802 couplers and decals.
GE 44-tonner Diesel Locomotive
These kits have been shipped and are only available via dealers or individuals.
GE U33C Diesel Locomotive
Lionel is trying to bring some more-to-scale S gauge engines to market. How true-to-prototype they will be is still to be seen. You can see a video of them announcing the new GE U33C diesel engine, and also the new Challenger steam locomotive, on this TCA video (the announcement starts at about the 26 minute mark, so drag the slider bar over to that time, near the end of the video, if you are not interested in the O gauge stuff). The GE U33C were built between 1968 and 1975. Lionel has a product page on their web site for the U33C. There is also a web page for the Challenger.
GP38
Jim King, of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. announced on July 28, 2011 that he is going to produce an S-scale GP38. He does not require money right now, but he does need a firm commitment so that he can count and plan ahead. He needs at least 30 firm commitments to make this project a "go". The estimated retail price is $395 per kit, plus shipping. There was not enough interest for a Hi-rail version, so it will only be produced with scale wheels. The kit will be patterned after the 1968-9 body style with a removable dynamic brake blister insert (the basic body will not have the dynamic brake molded in; you insert the parts if you need them). The kit will include the S-Helper Service EMD trucks.
GP40/GP40-2
Jim King, of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. is considering doing an S-scale run of these engines if there is sufficient interest. Contact him if you are interested in these. They would be produced after the GP38 has shipped.
Harriman Roofs
Bob McCarthy, of thesupplycar.net, has proposed doing a roof for 70ft Harriman passenger cars. Contact Bob for more information.
Kaslo Shops Cylindrical Covered Hoppers
Due to the urging of Michael Ostertag, Michael OstertagJohn Whitmore of Kaslo Shops is considering another run of his well-liked covered hoppers. If you are interested, send John an e-mail with the number of units you would like to order.
Model Logging Supply
Lon has indicated to me that what you see on his web site will be produced in S-scale (Sn3), however, it may be some time down the road. If you are interested in seeing those kits in S, drop him an e-mail!
Number Board Decals
Dave at LBR Enterprises, LLC. has announced that they will do a one-time run of various number boards. Please contact him about the number board numbers you want, including color (black or white), sizes, and fonts. When produced, these will be available for purchase on their site.
Ore Cars
Gerry Siegel has announced the soon to be released S-scale ore cars. The car is resin cast and is unpainted and without wheel and couplers. The car is priced at $30 per car and at $25 in lots of ten or more. There are photos Gerry provided of the car: photo #1, photo #2.
Reading Coach Roof
Bill Lane is making some Reading coach roofs (see his photo online). If you are interested, he is selling them for $25 each.
Roller Bearing Trucks
Michael Ostertag has convinced Jim King of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. to consider doing another run of his roller bearing trucks (with rotating ends!). They will be $17.95 a pair. If you run modern equipment, you need these. They will only be produced if there are sufficient number of orders. Contact Jim for placing your order/request or for more information. Here's a photo of the truck.
Roof Vents
Bill Lane still has some urethane roof vents available at $12 for a set of twelve of them (see his photo online).
Seaboard Air Line B-7 Box Car
This special, one-of-a-kind, one-time project was started by John Degnan and is designed by Jim King of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. (visit his web site for contact/payment information). The latest information is that the car will be designed starting in January 2012. There is, therefore, still time to get your order in, either directly from Jim or through one of his dealers. These kind of boxcars traveled all over the country, especially on the east coast. John's web site contains prototype information, the latest pricing, and, near the bottom of the page, a handy PDF file link that you can print or e-mail to all your "S" friends. To see the kind of kit this project will be, see my B&O M53 boxcar project.
Sergent Couplers
Sergent has been making prototypical couplers for a good number of years now. He produced them for S-scale for a while. However, since he redesigned the way the coupler is made, he has only produced them in HO-scale. John Degnan has been working with Frank Sergent to try to get him to make the same, new design coupler in S-scale. Sergent has indicated that he is interested, but that he just needs to find a slot in his schedule to make them. Sergent produced a sample production S-scale coupler and sent several to John to check out. John was pleased with what he saw. Encourage this project along by contacting Sergent and requesting the new S-scale coupler. Find his contact information on his web site. For a preview of the new coupler, see John's web page. The latest word is that Frank Sergent is planning on having the new S-scale coupler available before the end of 2011.
Sergent Coupler-compatible Draft Gear Boxes
With the advent of the new Sergent couplers, John Degnan has set out to design a new draft gear box that will fit the Sergent couplers. It is my understanding that Jim King of Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. will manufacture these as soon as Sergent starts releasing the new couplers. John has a web page detailing his gear box, including photos and video of his pilot model.
Shays
P-B-L has announced brass, 3-truck Shay locomotives in both Sn3 and standard S gauge. These are said to arrive in early 2012.
SP Pacifics
Scott Mann is taking reservations for S-scale SP Pacifics. There will be three versions: 1) Southern Pacific P-6 #2467 Black; 2) Southern Pacific P-10 with Sky line casing #2487; 3) Southern Pacific P-10 with casing in Daylight paint scheme. Price for these all-brass engines is $1,499.95 each. When you make your reservation, no money is due (if you don't honor your commitment, you will be "black-listed" for any future Sunset Models projects). He needs 100 reservations to make the project a go (as of mid-October 2011 he's not there yet). The product quality has been significantly improved, based on opinions of people whom have more recently purchased Sunset Models' equipment. Scott has indicated that he is interested in producing other S-scale engines, if the SP Pacifics project is well-supported. For more information, see Scott's web site (Sunset Models, Inc.). Note: the project was canceled at the end of August, 2011, but Scott has changed his mind and it is now back on.
Steam Switcher
River Raisin has announced and is going to produce an all-brass 0-6-0 steam switcher in a variety of road names (with details specific for those roads).
Swing Motion Trucks
Rene Gourley has started a project that Shapeways has made available through their 3-D printing abilities. These are trucks used by late 19th-Century freight cars, such as this one. Previously produced HO-scale models are shown in this photograph. The trucks are scaled to take NWSL 1.27" pointed axles, which are available in either Proto:64 or standard S-scale. Note that shipping is from the Netherlands, so some customs fees may be involved.
Track Mobile
Gerry Siegel is proposing a kit or R-T-R track mobile in S-scale. Powered truck and lights would be included. The per-unit cost would be around $175. No pre-payment is expected. Once the project is a "go" and the final price has been determined, firm commitments would be requested, but no payment until the unit is ready to be shipped.
Tunnel Portals
Altoona Model Works is now offering S-Scale Single & Double Cut Stone Tunnel Portals patterned from B&O drawings in the B&O Standard Plans for MOW and Construction – 1917. These are hydrocal (plaster cast portals). Single portal dimensions: overall height 5 7/8" width 9 11/16", portal opening height 4 5/16" width 3". Double portal dimensions: overall height 6.5" Width 12", portal opening height 4 7/8" Width 6 3/16". These portals retail for $25 each for the Double and $18 each for the Single. Please contact Ed Sauers for additional info and introductory pricing if ordered by December 31, 2011. Prices do not include shipping charges. Portals will also be available directly from Altoona Models Works early next year.
UTLX Ethylene Car Tank Car
Iron Rail Models LLC is proposing doing this modern tank car. This type of car is running on the rails today. The commodity carried by this particular car is ethylene oxide. This is a new Plate C style car with the proper placards and markings. It carries 25,520 gallons of the stuff. This car can be produced as scale or hi-rail, if preferred. A minimum of 10 cars need to be ordered for this car to be considered being produced. The price per car is $89. Please contact Iron Rail Models if you are interested. Here's a photo of the car: photo.
